Delivering IT support and services to schools in Barnet

The London Borough of Barnet is located in north London, with a population of more than 390,000 people, it is the largest London borough by population.  Capita has worked with Barnet Local Authority since 2013 to deliver key services including HR, payroll and IT. As part of the partnership, Capita Managed IT Solutions provides IT services and support to approximately 70 primary and secondary schools in Barnet.

Schools IT service

The Schools IT support service is focused on ensuring schools receive IT support tailored to their individual needs, and in line with their school IT vision. Schools have the option to choose from a portfolio of support services including; support of their IT network and servers, school administration, hardware warranty and onsite support. 

The administration support covers the schools Management Information System (MIS), including technical support as well as advice and guidance on meeting statutory requirements. The portfolio of support services ensures the IT environment is reliable with no disruption to learning and teaching. The Service Desk located in Barnet is staffed with technical specialists to resolve issues and assign engineers when required, it is available 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Capita work as a trusted IT partner with individual schools, to guide and support their IT plans and vision. Offering consultancy and advice on the best hardware and infrastructure choices identifying where best to allocate limited budgets and plan for the future. Capita also work with each individual school in Barnet to deliver training, ensuring they achieve the best outcomes with emerging technology. 

Brunswick Park and Nursery School

Brunswick Park school is a community primary school in Barnet, with 432 pupils aged 3-11. The school were working with 3 different IT providers for support of their administration and curriculum IT services. This was proving difficult to manage and not representing the best value for money. The school also purchased software licences from multiple resellers and often caused duplication. Following an audit of the schools ICT infrastructure and spending, Capita consolidated the licensing and IT services into one support service, providing Brunswick Park School with significant cost savings. 

The server infrastructure and backup solution in the school was outdated, Capita designed a new virtualised server solution based on Microsoft Azure cloud technology and an off-site Disaster Recovery. The Azure cloud solution is integrated with the schools existing IT infrastructure providing the ability to scale the solution as the schools needs change as well as protecting student and staff data.

Cromer Road School

Cromer Road School is one of the oldest schools in Barnet, established in 1932 it has a depth of history. With 414 pupils aged 4-11 the school has a Good Ofsted rating. Capita worked with the school leadership team to develop a 3 year development plan and advise on prioritising IT projects to ensure they achieve the most in line with their vision while managing their budget across 3 years.

The process began with an audit of the schools existing IT infrastructure and contracts. From this Capita were able to understand the schools vision and budget and develop a plan in line with this. Cromer Road school has plans for a new school building, Capita is working with the school to ensure all IT services, hardware and infrastructure can be extended to the new school building.

Jewish Community Secondary School (JCoSS) based in Barnet is the first state-funded Jewish cross-communal secondary school in the UK. Plans for the new school began in 2001, founded with the core foundation of academic excellence. Through extensive community support the school opened in 2010 and has been enhanced with the opening of its 6th form centre in 2012. With modern state of the art facilities, the school provides an engaging and stimulating learning environment for its 1,100 students. 

Capita has worked with JCoSS since 2010, to provide and support an ICT service in line with their vision and strategy. From initial design of the school network and infrastructure to on-going monitoring and support, Capita ensures the ICT environment is reliable and robust, eliminating any disruptions to teaching and learning.
